Step into Spring

Step into SpringOh yes, it's that time of year again. The clocks have changed and the days now become lighter for longer. Ah, we can finally smell the Summer. After a harsh winter, it's refreshing to know that we won't have to put up with that again for another few months (hopefully) and we can finally dust off the barbeques and start on the gardening. With the summer upon us, it means jewellery can be exposed to things it's not usually exposed to. For example, mud when gardening, chlorine when swimming etc. This can mean that your silver jewellery can become tarnished so can therefore use a good clean. There are a couple of ways to do this. One is using a silver cloth, particularly for stone or amber jewellery, polishing your jewellery with a silver cloth will bring it up looking shiny and new.

With more stubborn tarnishes on just plain silver jewellery, we like to use a solution clean. Easy to do using household items, our solution clean includes: a bowl lined with tin foil, warm water, a tablespoon of salt and a table spoon of bicarbonate of soda. All you have to do is make the solution, leave your jewellery in there for a long period of time. We usually recommend overnight. Once it's done, you can take it out, rinse with clean, cold water, dry it off and it's ready to be worn! Please bear in mind this method is not effective for stone jewellery as it can unset the glue that holds the stone in place causing it to potentially fall out! It also does not work for plated jewellery as it can take the plating straight off. We recommend to only use it on silver jewellery.

If in doubt, please take your jewellery to a professional, we can always help and offer our expert opinion.
